Botox/Dysport

BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) and Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA) are prescription medications that are injected into muscles to temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe forehead lines, crow’s feet lines, and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults.

Pre-Procedure

  • If you have a special event or vacation coming up, please keep in mind that you may want to schedule your treatment at least 2 weeks in advance.
  • You are not a candidate for this procedure if you are pregnant/breastfeeding, are allergic to any of botox/disport ingredients, or have a history of neurologic disorders. 
  • It is recommended to avoid the use of Aspirin, NSAIDS, Ginko Biloba, Garlic Supplements, Green Tea, Flax Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Vitamins A and E, and essential fatty acids for up to 1 week pre and post injection as they will increase your risk of bruising. 
  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages 24 hours before (or after) your treatment to avoid extra bruising 
  • Do not apply products that are potentially irritating for 2 -3 days before and after treatment (examples- tretinoin/retin-a, glycolic acid, benzoyl peroxide, hydroquinone) –
  • It is recommended that you wait at least 2 weeks to have botulinum toxin treatments performed if you have previously had cosmetic treatments with laser, ultrasound, peels, facials or micro-dermabrasion.
  • Please inform your provider if you have any questions about this prior to the treatment

During the Procedure:

  • Please arrive with no face make up.  
  • Typically, we do not use a numbing agent for Botox or Dysport, but a topical anesthetic cream can be applied to help number area only by request as patient must arrive to clinic early.  
  • During the procedure, patient will be asked to move certain facial muscles in order to determine the target treatment areas. 
  • Multiple injections then will be made for each muscle treatment area. 

Post-Procedure

  • The treatment may take up to two weeks to take full effect.
  • Do NOT lie head down flat, touch, or rub the treated areas for at least 4 hours.
  • Avoid wearing hats or headbands after treatment.
  • It is best to try to exercise your treated muscles for 1-2 hours after treatment (e.g. practice frowning, raise your eyebrows, and squint).
  • Avoid Aspirin, Motrin, Gingko Biloba, Garlic, Flax Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, or any other essential fatty acids at least 3 days after treatment. These items may increase bleeding and bruising.
  • You may take Acetaminophen/Tylenol if you experience any mild tenderness/discomfort
  • You may ice the injection sites (but avoid firm pressure) for 15 minutes 3 times a day if needed. 
  • Avoid the use of Retin-A or similar products 3 days after treatment to avoid increased irritation or redness.
  • Avoid cosmetic treatments such as laser, ultrasound, peels, facials or micro-dermabrasion for 2 weeks after treatment with Dysport® or Botox®.
  • Please report to your provider if any increased pain, increased swelling, redness, blisters, or itching immediately, should it occur following your treatment.

Dermal Fillers

  • JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC injectable gel is for injection into the lips and perioral area for lip augmentation in adults over 21.
  • JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC injectable gel. This hyapironic acid filler is the first and only filler FDA-approved to treat age-related volume loss in the cheeks.   • Restylane Kysse is the first lip filler designed with XpresHAn Technology for flexible movement and natural-looking volume proven to last for up to one year in adults over 21.

Pre Treatment:

  • Do not apply products that are potentially irritating for 3 days before and after treatment (examples- tretinoin/retin-a, glycolic acid, benzoyl peroxide, hydroquinone) 
  • Avoid cosmetic treatments such as laser, ultrasound, peels, facials or micro-dermabrasion for 2 weeks prior to treatment. 
  • If you have a history of recurring cold sores, it is recommended that you are pretreated with antiviral medication prior to the injection treatments around or near the oral area starting 3 days prior to your treatment visit. Please consult with your primary care provider for prescription.

During the Procedure:

  • Please arrive 20 minutes prior to scheduled appointment for application of topical anesthetic cream. 
  • Please arrive with no face make up.  
  • Multiple injections will be made for each area treated. 
  • The provider will massage and evaluate the area after injections to determine amount and location of filler needed.
  • If needed, an additional filler may be used to establish volume and contouring. 

Post Treatment:

  • The most common reported side effects are temporary redness and swelling at the injection site. These effects typically resolve within two or three days. 
  • Do NOT, touch, press, massage, or rub treatment areas for 6 hours after treatment. 
  • You may ice treated sites to reduce swelling, but avoid firm pressure. 
  • Try to avoid wearing makeup or lipstick (if lips treated) until the day after treatment. Earlier use may cause pustules under the skin. 
  • You may use Aquaphor ointment for the lips if needed.
  • Avoid exercise and alcohol for 6 hours post-treatment.
  • Avoid Aspirin, Motrin, Gingko Biloba, Garlic, Flax Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, or any other essential fatty acids at least 3 days to 1 week after treatment. These items may increase bleeding and bruising.
  • You may take Acetaminophen/Tylenol if you experience any mild tenderness/discomfort
  • You may take an Anti-Histamine to help with tenderness and swelling.
  • Avoid the use of Retin-A or similar products 2 days after treatment to avoid increased irritation or redness.
  • Avoid cosmetic treatments such as laser, ultrasound, peels, facials or micro-dermabrasion for 2 weeks after treatment with Dysport® or Botox®.
